The presentation of the 2024 harvest, the 35th vintage to be released with our Numbered Seal of Guarantee took place on the 17th of January. During the event at the Balenciaga Museum, we presented the Mahasti Jaun Award to the Kofradia Itsas Etxea in recognition of its efforts to promote inshore fishing and local products, including Getariako Txakolina, two products that combine to perfection.
The presentation, which takes place every year during the festival of San Antón, brought together institutions and wineries in a small private event at the Balenciaga Museum. The popular celebration known as Txakolin Eguna – Txakoli Day – took place afterwards at the Getaria pelota court, where attendees were able to sample txakolis from 24 of Getariako Txakolina’s wineries in a festive atmosphere.
The 2024 harvest: The 35th vintage of Getariako Txakolina D.O.
The 2024 harvest is the 35th harvest to be released with our Numbered Seal of Guarantee. 35 years during which Getariako Txakolina has developed into a highly professional sector in which a new generation is proving its worth. With 20% of its production exported overseas, the authenticity of Getariako Txakolina is recognised all over the world.
As 2024, like 2023, was a wet year with only a few clear days, it was only thanks to the professionalism of the winegrowers that we were able to obtain a good quality production, albeit 10% less than last year. The wineries are investing in innovation while maintaining the tradition and identity of Getariako Txakolina, a fresh wine with an average alcohol content of 11º, balanced in the mouth with mild acidity.
This year’s production amounted to 2,500,000 litres, 10% less than in 2023, which equates to approximately 3,200,000 bottles on the market. 91% of the txakoli produced was white, 9% rosé and 1% red. The 2024 harvest produced the purely testimonial quantity of 500 litres of late harvest wine. As far as the production of sparkling wine is concerned, around 40,000 litres are produced each year, depending on the needs of the wineries.
In recent years, in order to keep pace with changes in consumer habits and tastes, wineries have been expanding the range of wines they produce.
Mahasti Jaun 2025: Kofradia Itsas Etxea
“Eating fish without a glass of txakoli is simply unthinkable”
The Kofradia Itsas Etxea, which is located in the old Fishermen’s Guild in the Port of Donostia, San Sebastian, has been collaborating with the Getariako Txakolina Denomination of Origin since it opened in 2020, organising pairings of seasonal fish and Getariako Txakolina, two products that combine to perfection.
This collaboration takes the form of tasting sessions at the Kofradia Itsas Etxea itself, as well as participation in events such as the Verdel Eguna (Mackerel Day) in Mutriku, the Antxua Eguna (Anchovy Day) in Getaria and the Hegaluze Eguna (Bonito Day) in Hondarribia.
The Kofradia Itsas Etxea was an initiative of the OPEGUI (the Organisation of Inshore Fishing Producers of Gipuzkoa) designed to promote artisanal fishing in the Basque Country, with two main objectives:
- To contribute to the generational change in the inshore fishing sector by presenting it to young people as a career option within a modernised, passionate and sustainable profession.
- To promote the consumption of inshore fish by increasing public appreciation and awareness of our different seasonal fish, how to preserve and eat them, their nutritional benefits and the fishing techniques we use.
Getariako Txakolina Designation of Origin: some facts and figures
Geographical area: The Historical Territory of Gipuzkoa
464 hectares (1146 acres) of registered vineyards. In 2024, 69 winegrowers who work and maintain the vineyards have been issued with a winegrowers’ card.
31 wineries registered for the 2024 harvest: 3 in Aia, 1 in Alkiza, 1 in Beizama, 2 in Deba, 9 in Getaria, 1 in Hondarribia, 1 in Mutriku, 1 in Oiartzun, 1 in Olaberria, 1 in Oñati, 2 in Orio, 1 in Villabona, 6 in Zarautz y 1 in Zestoa. (3 wineries that took part in the 2023 harvest have temporarily withdrawn this year).
The wineries work practically 80% of the vineyard area, which means that they are involved in the entire txakoli process, from the actual vines themselves to the winery and finally to the marketing of the product.
Recommended varieties: Hondarrabi Zuri, a white variety, accounts for 85% of the vines; Hondarrabi Beltza, a red variety, for 10%; and the remaining 5% is made up of other white varieties authorised by the D.O. Regulation, such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Gros Manseng and Petit Courbu, but never more than 20% of the total production of each winery, to ensure that Hondarrabi Zuri continues to be the main variety and, at the same time, preserve the uniqueness and authenticity of Getariako Txakolina.
Getariako Txakolina is identified by a numbered seal on the cap of each bottle, in addition to the label of each registered winery.
The control body appointed by the Designation of Origin to certify Txakoli is the HAZI Foundation, which, together with the Control Board, ensures compliance with the regulations laid down to guarantee the quality of the product.
