Getaria Txakoli, a different wine

With the 2019 vintage, we celebrate 30 years of our Protected Designation of Origin status. Three decades which have served to achieve a wine with an excellent quality and to consolidate a professional sector deeply rooted in its territory, carrying out the entire productive process, from the production of grapes to the labelled bottles leaving the winery to be sold.

In 1989, there were 12 wineries and 148 acres of vineyards registered, with 260,000 bottles produced. Currently, we have 33 registered wineries with an average annual production of 3,500,000 bottles, and 1,070 acres of vineyards in a geographical area that covers the entire province of Gipuzkoa.

The Atlantic climate and a landscape of gentle slopes and mountains, together with the Ondarrabi grape variety, create a specific growing area that gives the wines produced here their unique character. Made from our native grapes, the white Ondarrabi Zuri and the red Ondarrabi Beltza, Getaria Txakoli is produced 90% white and 10% rosé, with red being a very small amount. Getaria Txakoli is a young wine with moderate alcohol content and balanced acidity. It is a wine that is constantly evolving, both in its viticulture and in the different winemaking techniques used by the registered wineries. This evolution is evident in its consumption. Getaria Txakoli has gone from being, decades ago, a wine consumed almost exclusively locally, to a wine recognized worldwide for its quality. Currently, 15% of our production is exported, primarily to countries such as the USA, Japan, and France within the European Union.
