Getaria Txakolina D.O. Visit to the Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo D.O.s
Chronicle of a Getariako Txakolina D.O. tour, on which we discovered Ribeira Sacra’s heroic viticulture and the spectacular landscapes of Las Médulas in El Bierzo.
At the end of August, Getariako Txakolina D.O. went on a trip to discover other forms of working vineyards, to exchange knowledge with the viticulturists in these areas and (of course) to taste their wine. An experience which enabled us to discover the heroic viticulture of Ribeira Sacra and to see up close the spectacular landscapes of Las Médulas in El Bierzo.
On our tour of the “heroic viticulture” of the Ribeira Sacra D.O., we were able to see in situ that the adjective “heroic” is in complete accordance with reality. During our catamaran journey along the River Sil, we enjoyed spectacular scenery, with slopes which are difficult to work on and yet which have maintained traditional vineyards for generations.
In the company of Marta of the Ribeira Sacra D.O. Control Board, Pablo Ibáñez showed us round the Regina Viarum winery; César Enriquez introduced us to the Adega Cachin winery and Víctor Rodríguez took us round Val da Lenda. At all three wineries, we had the chance to taste wines made with the principal varieties of Godello for white and Mencía for red.
We also visited the Bierzo D.O., where Noelia –of the Perez Carames winery– invited us to taste their different organic wines at their premises on Calle del Agua in Villafranca del Bierzo. Later on, we visited the Palacio de Canedo winery, where José Manuel explained their work philosophy to us. We enjoyed a fantastic meal at their restaurant and, to end the day, we took a tour of Las Médulas as the sun went down, another impressive landscape, formed by the remains of an ancient Roman gold mine.
Our sincerest thanks to Ribeira Sacra D.O., Bierzo D.O. and the Bierzo Association for the Development of Wine Tourism for their help in the organisation of this professional tour.
