Getariako Txakolina wineries will participate in the BIOBOX project
Several Getariako Txakolina wineries are participating in the BIOBOX project by hosting nesting boxes in their vineyards to control pests biologically. The project i led by the Aranzadi Society of Sciences and the Biodiversity Foundation.
On 21 May, the BIOBOX project was present at the Petritegi Cider House. This scientific project´s goal is to promote pest control biologically, both in Getariako Txakolina Designation of Origin vineyards and in Protected Designation of Origin Euskal Sagardoa orchards.
Nesting boxes for birds and shelters for bats have been installed in several of our vineyards, with the goal of boosting their numbers and thus consolidating their role in the management and handling of biological control-in our case, of the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana). The wineries belonging to the DO Getariako Txakolina who are participating in BIOBOX this year are: Ameztoi, Arbela , K5 Argiñano y Talai Berri
The BIOBOX project takes place under the leadership of Aranzadi Society of Sciences and is supported by the Ministery for Ecological Transition through the Biodiversity Foundation.
The innovation of this project, managed by the Ornithology Department of the de la Aranzadi Society of Sciences, lies in the research and fine tuning of a management model with greater biological control of these two agricultural systems, the vineyards and orchards of the Basque Country.
